European Dragon Championship 2021 cancelled

It is with much regret that the organisers Club de Regatas Puerto Portals, together with the Spanish Dragon Association and the International Dragon Association have jointly decided that it will not be possible to hold the Dragon European Championship in April this year on the scale and to the standards that everyone expects. The Coupe Virginie Heriot which is awarded to the winner of the European Championship is one of the premier trophies in one-design yacht racing.

The pandemic continues to affect large numbers across Europe and the slow roll out of vaccination programmes means that travel will be unsafe or impossible for many sailors before the regatta is scheduled to begin in mid April. Even with vaccinations, the continued restrictions on socialising, and Government restrictions on numbers of participants at sporting events, will impact on the event.

The organisers together with the SDA and IDA have taken this difficult decision recognising their duty not just to provide a top level event but to protect sailors and their families from potential exposure to the virus.

Nevertheless with many Dragons sitting in the marina in Puerto Portals, and accessible to local residents and some visitors, the organisers will hold a racing event during the previously planned dates 12 – 16 April 2021. Details will be posted in the coming days on https://www.crpuertoportals.com  and on https://internationaldragonsailing.net
