Thomas Schmidt, Jorgen Schonherr (helm) & Christian Videbaek are Danish Champions.
33 Dragons competed for the 2016 Danish National Championship over the weekend hosted by the Dragoer Sejlklub, just South of Copenhagen. It was a mainly light wind regatta sailed over 3 days with 8 completed races.
Jorgen Schonherr, 3 times winner of the Dragon Gold Cup, sailed a brilliant regatta to win the Championship with his “Corinthian” crew of Thomas Schmidt & Christian Videbaek… Fresh from a 4th overall in Douarnenez, Jorgen and his team showed great speed and solid tactics to win the series by 10pts from RUS 27 “Anapourna” helmed by Anatoly Loginov, crewed by Vadim Statsenko and Alexander Shalagin..
2nd overall were RUS 27 “Anapourna” Anatoly Loginov, Vadim Statsenko & Alexander Shaligin.
Finishing in 3rd place overall was GER 11 “Cameleer” helmed by Marcus Brennecke, crewed by Olympic Champion & America’s Cup supremo Jochen Schumann, and Theis Palm. Jochen won his 1st Gold Medal in 1976 in Finn, then later 2 more Golds and 1 Silver in Solings, 1988, 1996 & 2000! It is fantastic to have sailors of Jochen’s quality joining our fleet, proving once again that Dragons are the best one design keel boat in the World….
3rd overall, GER 11 “Cameleer” Marcus Brennecke, Theis Palm & the “Legend” !!
It was a wonderful weekend of sailing enjoyed by all the competitors, including many of the “inexperienced” and “new” sailors into the class. The Danish Fleet are encouraging many more sailors into the class and as we all know, once you get the “taste” you have it for a life time 🙂
Winners of the “Inexperience” Sailors was DEN 176 “Playmate” helmed by Niels Pedersen, crewed by Carsten Bak Matthiesen & Christen Just Petersen.
It was also great to see The Crown Prince of Denmark sailing with his son Christian, as it was Lars Hendriksen racing with his 2 sons, Oscar & Johan.
The Dragon is for everyone and it’s Legacy will live forever……..
