Alvaro Marinho leads after the first day of the annual Stavros Match Race Championship taking place at the Club Naval de Cascais in Portugal. With all the racing just 200m from the Club, there were a number of spectators watching this colourful event as the Invited Teams did battle before their very eyes. The “gusty”wind was from the North West all day as the predominately blue ski was occasionally interrupted by the odd cloud..
With two former “Stavros” Match Race Champions, Pieter Heerema (NED) and Gustavo Lima (POR) on 5 wins, the day belonged to Alvaro and his crew Nuno Barreto and Rodrigo Vantacich who ended the day with 8 wins. Alvaro is sailing POR 64 “Lady Tati” which has been kindly loaned by Patrick de Barros who unfortunately could not attend this year.
After the first day of sailing the teams enjoyed a “happy hour” in the Club Naval with live Irish Music. Whilst this evening will see the traditional meal at one of the most famous “Fish” restaurants in Portugal, O’Pesdador with around 40 invited sailors & guest’s attending the Prize Giving.
Today (Weds) will be the conclusion of this exciting event before the Grade 1 Juan Carlos Trophy begins on Thursday. With a medium to strong wind forecast it will make for some great racing and require excellent team work amongst these well drilled sailors, to see if anyone can stop Alvaro taking the title….
