RP160311_CDWS5SD1_1823Start of race 1 yesterday in Cascais, 15 boats sailing in 15kts of breeze from the North.

Sunshine and a brisk Northerly wind oscillating down from the mountains of Estoril greeted the 15 boat fleet for the opening day of the Cascais 5th Winter Series….

RP160311_CDWS5SD1_5076Exciting upwind and downwind sailing at this fantastic venue, ESP 71 “Gunter” takes the lead.

Race one was one by the ever improving Spanish Sailor Javier Scherk helming ESP 71 “Gunter” crewed by Diogo Barros & Paulo Manso. 2nd was GER 1102 “LiLu” helmed by Philipp Pechstein, crewed by Roman Koch & Bernd von Hoermann. In 3rd place was RUS 76 “Stange Little Girl” Dmitry Samokhin, Andrey Kirilyuk & Aleksey Bushuev.

Winner of Race 1 Javier Scherk is delighted to finish ahead of so many top International Teams. This is Javier’s first full season in “Gunter” and it is great to see a Spanish boat back on the circuit.

Here we see GER 1102 “LiLu” Philipp Pechstein fighting hard with GER 1162 “Desert Holly” Stephan Link. With the famous “Santa Marta” Lighthouse in the background. This Lighthouse was re-opened to the public as a museum as it played such a significant role in the defence of Cascais back in 1868 !

In the 2nd race of the day it was Local Hero and the Club Naval de Cascais Vice President Jose’ Matoso helming POR 66 “Drago” who took the victory.

RP160311_CDWS5SD1_5115 (2)POR 66 “Drago” Jose’ Matoso, Gustavo Lima & Nate Campbell win race 2 yesterday.

Following behind Jose’ in 2nd place was DEN 410 “Out of Bounce” helmed by Jens Christensen, crewed by Kim Andersen & Rene Villefrance. In 3rd place was again RUS 76 “Strange Little Girl” who had a very good consistent day.

Two 3rd places for RUS 76 “Strange Little Girl” Dmitry, Andrey and Aleksey……

Top “Corinthian” team currently in 8th place overall is SWE 385 “Still Crazy” helmed by Stefan Winberg, crewed by Thomas and Nicola Wilton. This experienced team have recorded a 5th & 12th so far and have won a previous race in an earlier series, so can never be taken for granted….  🙂

With 3 more races today, it will be interesting to see how GER 1162 helmed by Stephan Link, crewed by Fank Butzmann & Michi Lip (who have been practicing hard in Dubai all winter) cope with stronger winds than they have been used too in their “Middle East” base…..

Higher, Faster, Longer………..      Stavros.
