Message from IDA Chairman
Dear Dragon sailors

I do not need to remind you that the first half of 2020 was a disaster for Dragon racing everywhere. The lockdown has been tough on all sailors worldwide in all disciplines and levels from youth to professional sailors, and the wider impact on suppliers such as boatbuilders, sailmakers, or marine photographers has yet to be fully realised. Since June, some countries are experiencing a controlled reopening of society and sailing, with each country going at its own pace. For the Dragon, we have seen many national events take place in Europe, but equally we have seen many events cancelled at short notice because of the impossibility of complying properly with Covid – 19 rules. Every country has its own particular rules about social gatherings and this must be the guiding principle for every event organiser.

This virus has not gone away, and we have seen spikes in Coronavirus cases in many countries over the past 2 months, just when authorities thought they had it under control, and people have relaxed. There are many inconsistencies in the way people observe the rules / guidelines about Covid. Some people are strict, while others do not seem to care at all.

To make it harder, restrictions between countries are being changed daily and this brings major challenges – in the planning of events and making sure they are conducted safely, and making sure that sailors from other countries can participate despite national restrictions.

As we all look forward to participating in the events that are still planned for 2020, I want to urge you all to be vigilant and to act as responsibly as you can. World Sailing has published detailed guidelines for event organisers which we should all adhere to.

We all want to get back to racing again against our friends from all around the world. All sport is an important part of society with its unique ability to build relationships, bring camaraderie, expand social networks and in the case of sailing, be a sport for life. Let’s make sure we are all safe to enjoy it into the future.

Stay safe!
Best
