Winners of the Princess Sofia Trophy, Markus Koy, Jorge Lima & Helm Otto Pohlmann.
It was great to see the Dragon’s racing again at the 49th Princess Sofia Trophy held over the Easter Weekend, as the Spanish Dragon Fleet continue to attract more visiting teams. After a very successful winter series based at Puerto Portals, it was the turn of the Real Club Nautico to host the 16 teams for this top International event. A total of 5 races were completed over 3 days in near perfect conditions, despite one day being lost due to wind over 30kts!
The second start from Day 3 with the wind between 8 – 13kts, saw DEN 266 called “UFD”!
The event was dominated by Germany’s Otto Pohlmann helming UAE 9 “Desert Eagle” who recorded three 1st places, a 3rd and a 5th, to finish on just 11 points. With no discard until a possible 6th race, this gave Otto and his top team of Markus Koy and Jorge Lima victory by a clear 6 points.
Impressive sailing from UAE 9 Otto Pohlmann & his team winning 3 of the 5 races.
Otto’s crew Jorge Lima commented after sailing “It was nice and warm, classic Palma days even though we could not race on the Saturday. On Friday two races were sailed in nice waves with wind between 18 to 23 kts, then on Sunday we completed 3 races in a lovely sea-breeze of 8 to 13 kts. Our team did a fantastic job with very few mistakes, this gave us a solid win over a very good fleet.” So many congratulations to Otto, Markus and Jorge.
Also showing good speed and tactical awareness was our IDA Vice Chairman Stephane Baseden, crewed by Patrick Aucour & Pascal Rambeau, who put together a strong series after winning the opening race. Helming FRA 420 “Outlaw” Stephane finished on 17 points with scores of 1, 4, 5, 4 & 3.
2nd Overall FRA 420 “Outlaw”, Stephane Baseden, with Patrick Aucour & Pascal Rambeau.
Fighting hard to take the final podium place was top Spanish sailor Javier Scherk helming ESP 71 “Gunter”, racing well to hold off Germany’s Tanja Jacobsohn who had to settle for 4th place overall. Javier, based in Barcelona, is mixing his Dragon racing with the competitive J 70 class and doing an excellent job of helping to promote one design racing in Spain.
3rd overall ESP 71 “Gunter” Javier Scherk, with Alvaro Marinho & Domingo Manrique.
So many congratulations to these top three teams and well done to the Spanish Fleet for the continued resurgence of Dragon’s back in Palma de Mallorca. The next event will be the “Copa del Meditterraneo” in just a few weeks time April 13th to 15th, based in Puerto Portals and possible charter boats are available. Just contact Pepe’ at Club de Regates, Puerto Portals for further information and the N.O.R.
Finally, with the European Championships scheduled for Palma in 2020, I can only see the Spanish Fleet going from strength to strength…..
Higher, Longer, Faster………. Stavros.
