Jose Matoso (centre) stands proudly between his professional crew Gustavo Lima and Frederico Melo after winning the 1st Dragon Winter Series by just one point ! It was another brilliant sailing day in Cascais, with an Easterly wind of around 16kts and a cloudless blue sky. Although the temperature was a little cooler, the 23 teams kept warm as they sailed two tough races on this final day. With everything to play for and at least six team’s still in with a chance overall, it was sad to see HUN 57 leave the racing with a broken Main Halyard. I can only guess the wire snapped at the ball that hook’s into the locking system within the mast. It’s something all Dragon Sailors should keep an eye on…. Bad luck Ferenc & the HUN 57 team, you had sailed a great series, but your time will come!
However, back out on the race course Jens Rathsack helming MON 2 “Jeanie” was burning up the track as he recorded a 1st and a 2nd in the two races with his crew Pedro Andrade and Stefan Waak, moving this competitive new team up to 4th overall. Meanwhile also sailing two outstanding races was Michael Zankel GER 1123 “Pow-Wow” who recorded a 3rd and a 1st with his top professional crew Michi Lip and Philip Blinn. This put severe pressure on the leader Jose’ as places changed all morning like a snake’s and ladder board…..Jose’ and his team recorded an 8th and a vital 3rd to just stay ahead of Michael.
Also having another steady day was RUS 76 “Strange Little Girl” who continued to sail well following their 3rd place overall in Lake Garda last week. Indeed, stand in helm Igor Goinberg and his excellent crew of Andrey Kirilyuk and Aleksey Bushuev did enough on this last day to secure another 3rd place overall, great sailing in two testing venues…
At the Prize Giving Jose’ Matoso thanked his local crew and told the full clubhouse that in fact there were now 46 Dragons based at the club and intending to race in November. Also all competitors and follower’s were enjoying the most fantastic photo’s taken over the three days by Professional Ricardo Pinto. Some of these all action shot’s taken with a shutter speed of 1000 per second, capture some amazing pictures and will make excellent X-mas present’s and memories of this first “Full-On” Winter Series in Portugal…….
