BEL 80.”Blackout” Manu Hens, Ben van Cauwenbergh & Thibaud den Hartigh. Aalsmeer winners..
Ben van Cauwenbergh helmed his 2006 Petticrows “Blackout” to record the perfect score of 7 wins, to end on 7pts in the Easter Grand Prix, in Aalsmeer. The club’s talented PRO Martin Kampschreur managed to organise another 3 races on Easter Monday to complete the 9 race series. With 9 races sailed, 2 discards were implemented, so Ben was able to throw out his 2 worst scores to count his 7 well deserved “Bullet’s”.. From the photo above it is apparent how happy this excellent “Corinthian” Team from Belgium have become…
2nd place overall went to the local favourites and well matched team of Father / Son’s, the Bakkers sailing in their 2004 Petticrows NED 402. With the last day sailed in lighter and more changeable winds, Jan helmed his boat beautifully using every bit of his local knowledge to record and 1st and a 2nd which edged them passed the “Full Speed” team who were just off the pace….
Olivier, Jan and Dominic Bakker. NED 402, finished a well deserved 2nd overall.
In 3rd place overall my team sailing GBR 585 “Full Speed” helm Martin Payne, crew Gabor Helmhout and Rudy Hofmann (2 days), Marc Reijnhoudt were grateful to already have a string of 2nd places in the bag as the last day was very difficult. With many chasing boats sailing very well in the tricky conditions our 3rd place overall was never guaranteed…. However, despite a late charge from the “Tigger” Team GBR 784, helmed by Tim Tavinor, crewed by his daughter Emma and owner Thomas Wilton, we held on to our position…. just.
3rd overall, GBR 585 “Full Speed” Gabor Helmhout, Martin Payne & Marc Reijnhoudt.
This left the “Tigger”team in 4th position and a super final day by BEL 69 Michel van Cauwelaert, crewed by Jan de Bie and Michel Vervisch who recorded a 2nd, 2nd 4th saw them jump up the leader board to finish 5th overall.
It was a fantastic event for all 22 participants in a variety of conditions, the PRO set some excellent courses and the volunteers back in the Club House worked hard to provide, quick craning in and out, ample car parking, easy access to trailers all weekend and delicious “Bitterballen’s” and Beers… 🙂
The Dutch Sailors are up and running this year and with the final event in Aalsmeer in early May followed by three more regatta’s in Muiden, sailed on the southern part of the Ijselmeer, don’t be surprised to see many more NED boats up the front of the Gold Cup fleet in September!
