KuhlungsbornOn a recent visit to this wonderful seaside resort on the Baltic Sea, I was very impressed with the first class infrastructure Kuhlungsborn has around it’s ideally situated Marina. The Segelclub Kuhlungsborn President, Dr Peter Menzel explained to me that although the hosting club itself is quite small with just around 100 members, they have been very active running major regatta’s since 2000. “We are bringing in top International Race Officer Christian Haake, to oversee the event to make sure we offer the very best racing to all competitors”. I also had the pleasure of meeting Christian who has vast experience of large “one design fleet racing” as he is the Club Manager at Munchner Yacht Club, Starnberg. His knowledge and experience of big fleet starting will assist him to organise much wanted long courses to test the very best. He is an excellent choice for such a prestigious event.

As you can see from the photo, the new Marina at Kuhlungsborn offers “easy” berthing and straight forward access to the nearby race course. With an unrestricted sailing area, free from all commercial shipping and all very close to the family sandy beaches, this venue has all the ingredients for a successful Grade 1 event. The 7 race series will take place over the 4 sailing days of Sunday 15th June through to Wednesday 18th, but please make sure you arrive on Saturday 14th as craning will stop at 6pm in time for the official “Opening Ceremony”. With a fleet of around 50 boats expected why not add Kuhlungsborn to your Dragon itinerary for this coming season……..you won’t be disappointed.
