Brennecke leads in Cascais..
Marcus Brennecke, GER 1080, crewed by Vincent Hoesch and Michi Lip, sailed consistently well today finishing with two 2nd places, to take the overall lead here in Cascais after 5 races… With the wind at around 110 degrees and gusting 18-20kts in race one, Ireland’s Andrew Craig started as he finished off in the last series by taking the line honers in NOR 282 Finito’.. He then followed up with a 4th place in race two as the wind increased to 25kts. But, unfortunately due to their late arrival (closed airport), Andrew and his team are racing for practice only.. Meanwhile, yesterday’s leader POR 47 Henrique Anjos, could only manage two 5th places so slipped to 3rd overall..
The second race of the day was convincingly won by Jose Matoso’ POR 55 which moves him and his team up to 4th place overall. Jose pushed hard right off the start line and was rewarded with a little more current and a right hand wind-shift, that gave him a comfortable lead by the first mark. He never looked back and was probably ordering his celebratory meal at his favorite local restaurant on his mobile as he hoisted his spinnaker and watch the fleet trail far behind him……………..
In 2nd place after 5 races is one of the local favorites, POR 46 helmed by Fransico P. Melo. Crewed by his brother Vicente’ and Diogo Pereira, Fransico (Coca), is having his best event yet since taking charge of his brand new Petticrow boat in the summer. After recording two 3rd places today, Coca deservedly holds the runners up spot…. With even stronger winds forecast tomorrow, it is doubtful if any more races will be sailed in this event, the last of the 2010 season. But, you never know……………
