21 International Teams completed 6 excellent races at the YCC “Extra Cup” March 1st to 3rd.

There was a great turnout at the weekend for the Yacht Club de Cannes penultimate Winter Series, the “Extra Cup”. With an exciting renovation nearly completed at the club, the 21 teams continued to enjoy the freedom and extra space allowed at the Port Canto Marina.

Drinks and Refreshments provided for all Sailors in Port Canto by Yacht Club de Cannes.

On arrival everyone was made aware of Sunday’s unfavourable forecast (Wind & Rain) so it was decided to try for 3 races on both Friday & Saturday to complete the 6 race series before the inclement weather arrived. The plan could not have worked better and under the careful guidance of our experienced Race Officer Philippe Enel all 6 races were completed by Saturday. In a 21 boat fleet and relatively light conditions the course of 2 upwinds and 2 down-winds can be a little less than 1nm. This allows for maximum 1hr races and quick turn-a-rounds.

The event was once again dominated by ITA 79 “Transbunker” (Zaoli Sails) helmed by Yvgeni Braslavets, crewed by Andrea Zaoli & Paolo Bozzano, who finished a clear 5pts ahead of 2nd Placed UAE 17 (Fritz Sails) Anatoly Loginov, Vadim Statsenko & Alexander Shalagin. In 3rd place was ITA 77 “True Story” (GBR 818 representing Yacht Club La Baule, also using Zaoli Sails), helmed by Martin Payne, crewed by Chris Brittain & Gillian Hamilton.

Podium Teams from left to right GBR 818 3rd, ITA 79 1st & UAE 17 2nd.

A special mention must go to two other race winners, SWE 404 helmed by Karl Gustaf Lohr who won race 2 and GBR 633 helmed by Ron James sailing in the twilight of his years who deservedly won race 5. Ron continues to enjoy racing his beautiful Cold Moulded Borresen (North Sails) as his skips into his 83rd year, quite remarkable and sets a great example to us all.

Huge thanks to YCC President Gerard Blanc (IDA Chairman), to YCC Secretary Karine Green, Race Officer Philippe Enel and all the helpers and volunteers at YCC for making this such a memorable event.

Next up is the popular Paul & Shark Regatta in San Remo in 2 weeks time that already has over 30 entries followed the final Cannes Winter Series beginning of April where teams will battle for the Commodores Cup..

Higher, Faster, Longer…….   Stavros.    “True Story”

My 3rd placed team, Chris & Gilly with Gerard.
