The International Dragon Association sends its sincere condolences to the Norwegian Dragon Association on the passing of His Majesty King Harald V of Norway.
King Harald was a sailor of international distinction. He represented Norway in three consecutive Olympic Games – Tokyo 1964, where he carried the Norwegian flag at the Opening Ceremony, Mexico City 1968, and Munich 1972 – competing in the 5.5 Metre class in 1964 and 1968, and the Soling class in 1972.
A lifelong competitive sailor
His competitive spirit and skill on the water was a constant throughout his life. In 2022 – at the age of 85 – he competed against the world’s finest sailors to secure a 10th-place finish in the 8 Metre World Championship in Geneva.
A lasting contribution to sailing
Beyond his impressive list of accolades, King Harald embodied the true spirit of seamanship: integrity, sportsmanship, and a lifelong commitment to the ocean.
He was the first President of the Norwegian Sailing Federation when it was founded in 1970 and became President of Honour at World Sailing.
