Martin Payne with Dominic Bakker and Olivier Bakker, sailing GBR 771 Finito’, dominated the third day of racing in La Baule with two 1st places and a 6th to take a convincing overall lead. The other race winner yesterday was local hero Remy Arnaud FRA 396 who at last found his form in these testing, and ever shifting conditions. With just one race to go today to round off this exciting 10 races series, the fight is on between NED 309 Guus de Groot and GBR 775 Poul-Richard Hoj-Jensen for 2nd and 3rd place overall.
It was another fantastic day of sailing with the wind moving from between 20 and 60 degree’s, predominately from the North East but major changes in both direction and pressure. “Our main focus was to always anticipate the next shift like a game of chess” said tactician Olivier Bakker on board “Finito”. Boat handling was key in the close contact sailing as manoeuvres were critical and decisive as the unpredictable shifts suddenly arrived. “My job downwind was to focus on the next dark patch of water, so that we could make major gains also on the fleet” added Dominic Bakker.
With all the members and volunteers connected with this amazingly friendly club out on the water, it was a truly memorable sight both as competitor and spectator alike. I have never witnessed such support and comradery at any other Dragon sailing regatta. When you come to La Baule you receive the “full package” of races, hospitality, refreshments, dinners and above all sunshine 😉
