POR 66 “Drago” Jose’ Matoso, Gustavo Lima & Nate Campbell hold a 3 point lead overall.
Three more races in Cascais yesterday, with three different winners, but it is former European Champion Jose’ Matoso who holds the advantage after five races sailed.
The first race of the day (race 3 of series) was sailed in just 7 kts of wind from around 250 degrees, which saw the right hand side of the beat pay for the first upwind. Taking full advantage of this was GER 1162 “Desert Holly” who’s tactician Frank Butzmann realised the gain they were making so protected the right and controlled the race until the end. 2nd was GER 1123 “Nice Shot” (former Pow Wow) helemd by new owner Jose Carlos Pina, crewed by local tactician Pedro Andrade & Fransico Pina, 3rd was ESP 71 “Gunter” Javier Scherk.
Winner 3rd race, GER 1162 “Desert Holly” Stephan Link, Frank Butzmann & Michi Lip.
For the second race of the day (race 4 of the series) there was a major right hand shift on the first beat, this meant for the second upwind the PRO had to move the top mark very close to the shore. This really made conditions very shifty, however it was perfect for Jens Christensen who helmed his DEN 410 “Out of Bounce” to victory with crew Kim Andersen & Rene Villefrance. In 2nd place was POR 66 Jose’ Matoso and 3rd GER 1162 Stephan Link.
DEN 410 “Out of Bounce” wins race 4, Jens Christensen, Kim Anders & Rene Villefrance.
In the final race of the day (race 5 of the series), the wind remained very shifty, ranging from 3 to 12 kts, so quite unstable. However, they say the cream always rises to the top and so it was POR 66 “Drago” who ended the day on a high, taking the victory and securing a 3pt overall lead. In 2nd place was GER 1162 “Desert Holly” with Stephan Link who must also have been very happy with his day moving into 2nd overall. In 3rd place was “Corinthian” sailors SWE 385 “Still Crazy” helmed by Stefan Winberg, crewed by Thomas & Nicola Wilton. This Corinthian team now move up to 7th overall and proved once again how they can hold their own against any “Professional” team…
3rd place overall after 5 races, ESP 71 “Gunter” Javier Scherk, Diogo Barros & Paulo Manso.
Today the wind looks light again, so the 15 International teams must wait patiently to see if the breeze fills in so that the final 2 races can be sailed.
If 2 more races can be sailed, it will probably be between “Drago” and “Desert Holly” for the Championship…. with ESP 71 “Gunter” trying to hold on to a very creditable 3rd place…. as RUS 76 “Strange Little Girl” is just 1pt behind!
Higher, Faster, Longer………………. Stavros.
p.s. Yet more fantastic photo’s from Ricardo Pinto. Thank you my friend 🙂
