The Dragon Gold Cup is considered the open World Cup of Dragon Sailing with a high calibre of interest from all over the world. This year, the Brewin Dolphin Dragon Gold Cup is hosted by the Kinsale Yacht Club, Co Cork, Ireland, from 8th-14th September.

Already, over 60 boats have entered from Japan, Hong Kong, Russia, Ukraine, Sweden, Germany, Finland, France, Portugal, Denmark and Monaco as well as strong fleets from Ireland and the UK. Up to 70 boats with crews that include multiple World Champions and past Olympians are expected in Kinsale.

Some of the top sailors registered to date include Lawrie Smith, Markus Wieser, Poul Richard Hoj-Jensen, Tommy Mueller and Vincent Hoesch – all well known international sailors with many world-class titles between them.

Lawrie Smith, together with Ossie Stewart and Tim Tavinor are the current Dragon World Champions. A British Olympic Bronze Medallist in the Soling in 1992, Lawrie Smith is well known for four Whitbread Round the World Races, and numerous America’s Cup and Admiral’s Cup campaigns.

Markus Wieser is the current Dragon Gold Cup holder and has won the Dragon Europeans 3 times. He also sailed professionally on the RC44, TP52 and Melges 24 circuits and is an ex Flying Dutchman sailor.

Poul Richard Hoj-Jensen is a double Olympic Gold Medallist in 1976 and 1980, has won 5 Dragon Gold Cups, 4 European and 3 World Championships as well as winning several world championships in other classes. He is the current Irish National Dragon Champion.

Tommy Mueller and Vincent Hoesch together won the Dragon World Championships in Dublin in 2007. Vincent has won 7 world championships in the Dragon, Star and H Boat, 9 Dragon European Championships and 6 Gold Cups.

Also competing are Joergen Schoenherr, winner of 3 Dragon Gold Cups; Lars Hendriksen, winner of 2 Dragon Gold Cups and 2 European Dragon Championships and former British Olympian and America’s Cup sailor Andy Beasworth who will be joining Klaus Diedreichs.

The Irish Dragon Fleet will be well represented by Edinburgh Cup winner, Simon Brien as well as established campaigners Martin Byrne, Don O’Donoghe, Andrew Craig and Cameron Good.

The race management team will be headed up by Alan Crosbie and the International Jury and measurement team have been appointed.
