Lawrie Smith takes the Title in Cascais.
With three races sailed today in the beautiful bay of Cascais and Estoril, Lawrie Smith won his first Dragon Regatta since recently joining the class, after using his vast “Match Racing” experience to keep Ireland’s Andrew Craig at bay…. Craig continued where he left off yesterday by winning the first race, then after a 3rd place in race two, he drew level on points with Smith…
But Smith knew Craig had started this event a little rusty, recording an 18th position! So by preventing Craig from a good position in the last race of the day, by match racing him down the fleet, Smith, Tavinor and Stewart took the title. RUS 96 Mikhail Muratov finished strongly with a 2nd in the last race to stay 6pts clear of “yours truly” so I had to settle for 4th place, with POR 50 Pedro Mendes Leal in 5th overall. RUS 69 Olga White won the last race and proved she will be a force to be reckoned with at the Worlds, in which both Smith and Craig will also attend… (I predict that both Lawrie & Andrew will be in the top 5 in Melborne)…
At the prize giving Lawrie thanked the Yacht Clube Naval of Cascais for hosting such a top class event, where food was provided each day for the deserved competitors during a “Happy Hour”. He also congratulated the Race Officer, Jose Cancella, for his superb course setting, excellent changes of course, when necessary and no time wasting between races.. Both Smith & Craig will return in two weeks for the next event in Dec.
In closing I received a hearth warming text from Petticrow’s Katie Cole, as she continues her private battle against Leukaemia. She follows the Dragon racing closely and looks forward, as we all do, to returning to sailing and socialising with our Dragon fleets around Europe, some time hopefully in 2011.. We all miss her smiling face and helping assistance at all major regatta’s, keep it going Katie, we are all with you…..
Finally, we can now look forward to the last two events on the IDA calender, both will be sailed over the weekend of DEC 3/4/5 one in Cannes and the other Cascais. Just think there will be 80 odd Dragon’s racing in total at the two regatta’s in December! what a superb keel boat class we have…….. Look out Melbourne, the Europeans are coming !!
