International Ranking List — Rules & Calculation

The International Dragon Association International Ranking List ranks Dragon helmsmen based on their results in eligible ranked regattas during the annual ranking period.

The ranking period runs from 14 October to 13 October the following year. These dates allow the annual IRL winner to be confirmed at the AGM in late October and published in the annual Yearbook.

Purpose of the International Ranking List

  • To rank Dragon helmsmen according to their performance within the ranking year.
  • To help allocate groups for championship events using group starts.
  • To allow the top 20 helmsmen from the previous year’s International Ranking List to automatically qualify for the following year’s World and/or European Championships.

Eligible events

Only the following events are included in the International Ranking List:

  • Championship events
  • Grade 1 events
  • Grade 2 events that are National Championships

How the ranking is calculated

Each ranked regatta is given an RL factor, depending on the status of the event:

  • National Championship: 1.0
  • Grade 1 event: 1.1
  • European Championship: 1.2
  • Gold Cup and World Championship: 1.3

For ranked regattas with 19 or fewer entries, a scaling factor is also applied:

  • 16–18 competitors: 0.85
  • 13–15 competitors: 0.75
  • 10–12 competitors: 0.65
  • Fewer than 10 competitors: 0.55

A helm’s total ranking score is calculated from their best four results within the ranking period. A minimum of four results is required to qualify for the overall annual ranking.
