4 Races were completed on Day 1 in St Tropez due to a strong wind forecastĀ for Day 2 & 3.
The Societe Nautique Saint Tropez took the decision to give the 27 International Dragon Teams the chance to complete 4 races on Day 1 of the 13th Edition pour le Dragon a St Tropez…(which was an excellent idea as it looks like there will be no more racing until Saturday). The weather here yesterday saw winds in excess of 100mph, big seas and a lot of rain š
After waiting patiently for the wind to fill in, RUS 76 had an almost “faultless” performance!
The 4 races were dominated by RUS 76 “Melody Nelson” helmed by Dmitry Samokhin, crewed by Andrey Kirilyuk & Aleksey Bushuev. This excellent team won 3 races and counted a 3rd toĀ lead overall on justĀ 6 points. š
Close racing on the short and exciting coursesĀ in the light unpredictable winds.
In 2nd place overall after the 4 races is FRA 401 “Courrier Des Saints” helmed by Gery Trentesaux who is enjoying a new start to the Dragon Class! Gery has plenty of experience over the yearsĀ racing a variety of yachts, in particular the popular “Figaro” class. Now teamed up with top French tactician Gwen Chapalain from Douarnenez, Gery has been quick to learn the Dragon’s secrets.
A clear start in St Tropez, on a well set line by Yves Leglese our Principal Race Officer.
In 3rd place overall after 4 races is SUI 311 “Sophie Racing” helmed by Gold Cup winner Hugo Stenbeck, crewed by his usual top team of Martin Westerdahl and Bernardo Freitas. This very experienced team will hope to be challenging for the title if more races can be sailed as they would likeĀ to discardĀ their 18th place recorded in race 3.
Great to see “Family’s” racing together. GBR 764Ā Mike Hayles with Wife Monique & Son Nick.
Along with the new faces in the class are two young Ladies sailing with their parents in NOR 275. The Dragon is so perfect for learning the skills and enjoying Family sailing at the highest level.
NOR 275 “The Knucker” with Per Arne Nilsen, his wife 2 daughters Josefine & Melene.
This beautiful “cold moulded” Petticrows boat was first launched in 2000, then owned by Odd Lofterodd from Norway. Sadly Odd is no longer with us but he would be delighted to know his wonderful boat is being very well looked after and enjoyed by this youngĀ & “Colourful” team š
So now we all wait with fingers crossed that the strong winds will die away and allow some more races over the next 2 days in this wonderful location.
St Tropez is ready to host the 2017 Gold Cup. Further details to follow soon…….
Plans are already in place to organise a fantastic Gold Cup next year (2017), with 100 boats expected it will be another “showcase” event for our amazing one design class…..
