Charles Nankin, Wolf Waschkuhn & Joao Vidinha (from the Worlds in Bodrum).

With the International Ranking List completed for the 2023 season it is once again Wolf Waschkuhn and his superb team of Charles Nankin and Joao Vidinha who finish on top. This is the second year in a row that Wolf and his team sailing “1 Quick 1” has won the Thomas Muller Trophy and deservedly so. As current World Champions Wolf, Charles & Joao have maintained their extremely high standard throughout the season and more recently finished runners up at the prestigious Gold Cup held this year in Torquay. Wolf told me “We started preparing in the winter of 2022 with a co-ordinated program of physical fitness anticipating long days on the water. Our main target was the World’s in Bodrum which we were delighted to win. SUI 318 are now the reigning European and World Champions, the first Swiss boat ever to achieve such a result, something we are very proud of and we are enjoying the moment”.  Very many congratulations to Wolf and his brilliant crew Charles & Joao.

2nd place on the IRL is Peter Gilmour sailing JPN 56 “YRed” crewed by his Son Sam Gilmour and Yaji Yasuhiro. This very experienced team finished a close 2nd to Lawrie Smith at the Edinburgh Cup & IDA Grade 1 in Cowes and more recently 2nd (also to Lawrie Smith) at the Gold Cup in Torbay. Another very strong season from Peter and his team showing consistency and great speed on the race course and superb tactical awareness.

JPN 56 “Red” Yaji Yasuhiro, Peter Gilmour & Sam Gilmour, 2nd on the International Ranking List this year.

In 3rd place on the IRL is Michael Zankel helming POR 90 “Easy” crewed mainly by Diogo Pereira & Joao Matos Rosa both from Portugal. Michael and his team have had many great results this season highlighted by their Grade 1 victory in Malcesine, Italy. Showing great skill and consistency Michael, Diogo & Joao won the 35 boat  event with a race to spare so did not need to sail the final race! A great season from POR 90 and worthy of their 3rd position.

POR 90 “Easy” Michael Zankel, Diogo Pereira & Joao Matos Rosa 3rd on the International Ranking List.

So very well done to our 3 top teams for this IRL season (November 2022 to October 2023).

We now look forward to our AGM on the 28th October at the Royal Thames Yacht Club, Knightsbridge, London.

Finally our 4th Grade 1 of 2023 in Vilamoura, Portugal (Nov 20th to 23rd) followed immediately by the European Grade 1 “Finals” (Nov 24/25).

Higher, Faster, Longer…….   Stavros.
