The idea for a special Riviera Trophy came about after the fantastic 90th Jubilee Regatta in San Remo in 2019 where the participants were enchanted by the welcoming atmosphere and professionalism of the host organising authority. In this wave of enthusiasm, the Dragon Association Monaco approached the Italian Dragon Association to see how the Dragon could be reintroduced into the schedule of YCM Regattas. No Dragons have sailed in Monaco since 2015. The Italian Association was eager to join this project and both associations are very much looking forward to continuing this spirit of camaraderie, sportive competition and friendship throughout these trying times in our beautiful region!
During late winter and early spring, the French Italian Riviera is well-known for mild temperatures and so the idea of a winter/spring event in the Mediterranean zone was born.
The Dragon Associations of Monaco and Italy have chosen four venues ALASSIO, IMPERIA, MONACO and SANREMO, all known for their hospitality, friendly organisation, the professionalism of their race officers, and overall for providing superb sailing areas during the winter /spring season.
The dates are concentrated over two months to permit easy participation, considering that the zone is in the centre of Europe, and easy to reach from everywhere by car or plane (Nice airport). In addition, the Italian Dragon Association and the Dragon Association Monaco are able to move and store the boats between the different venues.
The idea of the RIVIERA TROPHY is to provide an attractive option for Dragon Sailors this side of Europe, to leave their boats here for the other events in this area, for example in Sanremo the Grand Prix with Final 2021 and the Europeans in 2022.
We look forward to welcoming all Dragon sailors to the Riviera Trophy in 2021 and in the years following when we are certain the popularity of the event and the area are proven.
The Riviera Trophy 2021 – Four separate events in four stunning Mediterranean locations
The Organising Authority in each case is constituted by the local club: CNAM Alassio, Yacht Club Imperia, Yacht Club Monaco and Yacht Club Sanremo, in conjunction with their National Dragon Class Association.
The competitors participating at all four events will be able to discard their worst result.
Great prizes and associated social events, in the most delightful sweet winter Mediterranean Sea!
Please note that the Italian Dragon Association proposes to take care of derigging, moving and rigging the boats between the different venues, (cost to be determined).
