For those lucky sailors who get the chance to visit many different Countries and their various sailing venues, Torbole’ at the Northern end of Lake Garda, is one of those special places that has that “Wow” factor… Yesterday was the start of the Hans Detmar Wagner Dragon Cup and once again the two races sailed were exciting, rewarding and most importantly “fun” in this amazing mountained backdrop arena. Although we did not get the usual “full on” afternoon southerly wind, it was still a most challenging day which saw two different race winners.
In race one, DEN 266 Frank Berg, did his usual PIN end start and was first into the left-hand shore which gave him the chance to tack onto port and just clear this most competitive fleet. Although Frank was closely chased, he managed to stay clear and take the winners gun after the two upwind and two downwind legs.. However, in race two this same strategy did not pay off for Franky, as the wind shifted slightly to the right after the start. This gave the boats who started in the middle of the line a clear advantage as they were not only able to clear all the PIN end boats, but were then able to make the most of the left hand shift that usually kicks in halfway up the beat…. Are you all with me ??? Good then I”ll continue….
Making the most off his vast “Local” knowledge was favourite and co-organiser Vincent Hoesch helming GER 10.. who picked his lane to perfection and was never troubled again throughout the race.. Close behind Vincie was Belgium’s ever improving Ben Van Cauenbergh, with his excellent crew Manu & Thibud helming BEL 80 “Blackout”.. Who are now leading overall after finishing 2nd to Vincie and 3rd in race one…
In my interview with race winner Frank Berg and Club President Gianfranco Tonelli after the races, Frank was his usual “Joyful” self (True Story), whilst Gianfranco told me all about the Circolo Vela Torbole’ Club and their sailing aim’s throughout the year….. Check it out soon when Fiona put’s in on line.
With more races planned for today and tomorrow and a huge Pasta Party tonight, I’ll do my best to get back to you all with the latest updates from this Italian sailing paradise…
