The Dragons returned to Vilamoura yesterday to begin the XVIII Prince Henry the Navigator Trophy, which also combines the two regatta’s run back to back of the Amadeus Cup and the Dom Pedro Hotels Trophy. With superb accommodation offered by the Dom Pedro Hotel’s and Fillipe de Silva’s Apartments, all competitors enjoyed the excellent hospitality and were ready for some excellent, competitive sailing. POR 55 Jose’ Matoso with Stefan & Gustavo set the early pace with a convincing win in race one, followed up by a 2nd in race two. Close behind is NED 316 Pieter Heerama, crewed by William and Theis who were 4th in race one and then took the line honers in race two….
Although only 12 boats have made the journey this year, it is hoped that many more will come next year to savour the fantastic Marina, Hotels, Sailing Waters, Restaurants, Beaches and Sun…. The two races were held in 6kts of breeze and around 28 degree’s temperature. It’s hard to imagine a more perfect place to sail at this time of the year, whilst Portugal may be having a financial crisis, it’s weather and facilities are second to none…..
Today will see another two races which will add up towards the Prince Henry Trophy, but also conclude the Amadeus Cup. It looks to be a battle between POR 55 and NED 316, but others are lurking in the wings, so neither of the two leaders can afford to relax………
