Hello again my friends, well I’m not one to say “I told you so” but, I did…. No wind today here in Monaco so no sailing on our first scheduled race day of a shortened 3 day regatta. With a 10am start time, I was amazed that so many sailors were surprised that the AP flag went up around 9.am! (I could have called that last night)….Yesterday, when in my opinion we should have been racing, the wind came in around 1.00pm so it’s not rocket science to delay a start time to around 2.00pm. 2 races can then easily be sailed (if the breeze fills in), instead of getting everyone down to their boats at 8.30 – 9.00am……. Then sitting around ALL DAY! So many frustrated sailors are now in the Monaco Yacht Club drowning their sorrows with something a little more alcoholic than the copious amounts of Coffee & Water that they drank through the day……… With a start time of 10am again tomorrow, I/we hope for a miracle…..
However, the day was not a complete loss as it gave me the opportunity to mix with many of the competitors in this 25 boat fleet. My Italian friend Gianni in his beautiful Doomernik Dragon “Fetch the Dragon” reminded me of the fantastic time we had last year in San Remo, with 54 Dragons having a great regatta. This year Gianni and his team are hoping to attract as many boats again for their 4 day event from 24th-27th March. Will you be there to sample the Italian hospitality and delicious wine, please put it in your diary and support this every growing friendly Italian fleet……
Also Uli Libor asked me to remind you all that the Europeans in Germany will take place in conjunction with the Childhood Charity Grand Prix from the 2nd to the 8th of July. With Uli and his hard working wife Manuela gaining the support and sponsorship of BMW (with a little help from Markus Wieser), it should be a fantastic regatta in this perfect location of Boltenhagen on the Baltic Sea. Make sure you bring your swimming kit as the beaches and waters are both clear and inviting, an event not to miss…….
Finally, it looks like the Grade 1 event in Cannes at the end of this month will have 60 boats competing! Who said there is a recession on ………… Higher, Faster, Longer, Waiting, Frustrating….. Stavros.
